NYC Nightlife: The Scene

The hottest clubs, coolest bars and everything in between

CHERRY LIPS AT STATIC LOUNGE, THURSDAYS

Cherry Lips Thursdays returns to Astoria on a weekly basis, now at a sexy new venue—Static Lounge in the heart of Astoria. On most nights, this mixed gay bar features way-off-Broadway performances by upcoming musical theater actors and the occasional weekend drag show. But on Thursdays, Crazy Maria and Natalie Rivzz take over the plush space with a rotating cast of guest DJs spinning a little bit of everything. Resident go-go dancer Priscilla DiStasio would be worth the price of admission if there was one (there’s never a cover). A gorgeous staff of lezzie bartenders serve up drink and bottle specials all night!

HOT RABBIT AT THE MONSTER, FRIDAYS

Hot Rabbit at the Monster boasts an enviable track record of booking the queer scene’s top DJs, multisexual go-go artists and live performers every Friday. It sounds exhausting (at least to us ink-stained wretches), but Boy Wonder Events manages to stay ahead of the game. This spring, check out Boston’s DJ LeahV on April 11, DJ Ches from Wild Thang! on April 18, and Madame X’s DJ Monstar on May 9. Then, dust off your dandiest duds for Hot Rabbit’s stylish event Dandy/ette on May 13! Now that the weather is slightly warming up, the Monster’s $9 frozen margaritas and $5 sea breezes are sounding mighty refreshing.

LESBO-A-GO-GO AT STONEWALL, FRIDAYS

This party, and its venue, need no introduction! One of the longest-running lesbian weekly events in New York is going stronger than ever after more than seven years, and the historic Stonewall Inn never looked better. DJ Stacy and DJ Kristine rotate behind the decks and offer upbeat house, disco and party anthems. Need we mention that Lesbo-a-Go-Go also offers one of the best bargains for your Friday night amusement? There’s never a cover and the friendly bartenders sling some of the cheapest booze in Manhattan. Also: go-go bombshells. That’s a combo we can appreciate!

RUMBA AT BUM BUM BAR, SATURDAYS

Beloved by the ladies of Woodside, Queens, Bum Bum Bar creates a welcoming place for Latina lesbians from all over the city. The busiest night is undoubtedly Saturday, when women pack the dance floor to groove to salsa, merengue, bachata and Latin pop. The bar hosts the occasional special event like the recent rodeo weekend, which involved sexy cowgirls, a mechanical bull and two days of partying—use your imagination! Looking ahead to June, Bum Bum Bar always throws an incredible Queens Pride afterparty with eye-popping go-go dancers, guest DJs and delicioso drinks. Stay tuned for details!

STACY LENTZ’S BIRTHDAY AND STRIP N’ SING KARAOKE AT STONEWALL, APR 17

This Thursday bash will go down in the history books! Join the Stonewall staff in celebrating owner Stacy Lentz’s birthday on April 17, and then stick around for Strip n’ Sing. We predict the clothes will come flying off at this special edition of Sir Sabrina’s and Danielle Presents’ weekly karaoke extravaganza. The liquid courage will be flowing, so you have no excuse not to get up on stage and belt out “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Crowd favorites can win drink specials served by the comely bartending staff, or the grand prize—a $50 bar tab to share with friends or just keep for yourself.

SKIN: DARE TO BE BARE EVENT AT DROM NYC, APR 19

We’re thanking our lucky stars that winter weather is behind us. After hiding under sweaters since last year—it seems like much longer, no?—we can’t wait to throw off the layers! Indulge in spring fever at Lovergirlnyc’s and Dreamgyrls Ent.’s third annual Skin—Dare to Bare Event at the subterranean club Drom. Deva the Diva, Lez Play Camz and Lady Chanou encourage you to “bare your stems” and enjoy a slew of bottle specials until 1am. DJ Missy B and DJ Kidd Swag spin; your MC is Poca the Papergirl. Don’t miss Franceleslia’s debut on the decks. All this deserves a chic crowd, so now’s the time to wear your finest spring threads!

SAGE WOMEN’S TEA AT HENRIETTA HUDSON, APR 20 AND MAY 17

In Henrietta Hudson’s 20-plus years as one of New York’s iconic lesbian bars, it has contributed time, funds and space to nonprofit organizations helping the LGBT community. On the third Sunday of every month, the West Village bar hosts a Sunday tea dance to benefit SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders). The fundraiser, from 3-9pm, offers drink specials, fun company and party tunes from DJ Susan Levine. Every bit of the proceeds from the suggested donation of $10 will go to SAGE. Don’t miss the official spring fling on April 20 and a pre Memorial Day celebration on May 17.

THE BEST WOMEN’S DANCE IN NYC AT CLUB LQ, MAY 4

Mark your calendars for SAGE’s spring dance, the best women’s dance in NYC, on May 4 at the schmancy midtown club LQ. There’s a reason this event has been going strong for more than 30 years. Women of all ages come to see old friends, meet new pals, scope out partners-in-crime and bust a move to DJ Susan Levine’s mix of house, Top 40 and classics. Proceeds go toward SAGE’s programs to help our LGBT seniors. What could be better than that? And just FYI, some of the dames on the dance floor are in their 90s. What’s your excuse?
