This week, Saturday Night Live gave a shout-out to New York City bar Henrietta Hudson for offering customers free Covid testing.
In this week’s installment of “Weekend Update,” host Michael Che poked some good-natured fun at the bar’s latest policy. “A lesbian bar in New York City is now offering on-site Covid tests for their customers,” Che said. “They plan to use a much less invasive technique where they sort of just grind around on the outside.”
Henrietta Hudson, the city’s longest-running queer/lesbian bar, began offering free PCR and rapid tests on December 30. “This was a good way to stay open safely,” owner Lisa Cannistraci told Curbed earlier this month. “Plus who doesn’t want to go and get tested and have a drink while they’re waiting?”
The jab at Henrietta Hudson wasn’t the only queer happenings on SNL this weekend. The episode was hosted by out actress Ariana DeBose, fresh off her Golden Globe win for playing Anita in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of “West Side Story.” In the opening monologue, as she prepared to bring a little Broadway to the show, she was suddenly interrupted by out SNL cast member Kate McKinnon.
“Did I hear ‘sing songs from ‘West Side Story’ with Kate McKinnon?’” McKinnon asked.
“Ah, nope,” replied DeBose, “but hi Kate.”
The two then launched into a hilarious “West Side Story” medley that included a mambo, finger snapping, and a fist bump on the lyrics, “I feel pretty and witty and gay!”
Although she called “West Side Story” her favorite musical, McKinnon did, however, admit that she hadn’t yet seen the latest rendition. “I don’t leave the house ‘cause of Covid,” she quipped, adding, “and also ‘cause I don’t leave the house.”
