Rebel Wilson Celebrates As Defamation Case Against Her Gets Dismissed
Wilson still faces legal hurdles surrounding her directorial debut.
Rebel Wilson is celebrating a legal victory in one of the defamation cases surrounding The Deb.
There’s been a lot of drama linked to the Pitch Perfect star’s directorial debut. The Deb was filmed back in 2023, but a series of disputes and legal issues between Wilson and the producers kept complicating the film’s release.
During these disputes, Wilson publicly alleged that one of the actresses, Charlotte McInnes, changed her account of alleged sexual harassment by producer Amanda Ghost after receiving career opportunities. McInnes subsequently sued for defamation, claiming that Wilson maliciously “mischaracterised and exploited” the incident in question.
However, Justice Elizabeth Raper ultimately dismissed the case this week after concluding that McInnes and her team failed to prove that Wilson’s statements rose to the level of causing serious harm to McInnes’s reputation or career.
Wilson took to Instagram to celebrate the dismissal, writing, “This process has taught me a lot. It has tested me, but it has also reinforced something I’ve always believed. I want to live my life standing up for what I believe is right, while continuing to create work that brings people joy.”
“I’m grateful this chapter has reached its conclusion and I’m looking forward to getting back to what I love most, my family and my work,” she added. “Thank you to the Judge and the Australian legal system who I have the utmost respect for.”
Although this is certainly a win for Wilson, it’s not the end of her troubles surrounding The Deb. The producers’ defamation lawsuit against her remains pending, as does Wilson’s countersuit. She also faces a separate lawsuit from production company AI Film, alleging that Wilson blocked The Deb‘s release.
“I want nothing more than to have this film released,” Wilson said in response.
The Deb currently has a U.S. digital release scheduled for August 25.
