NY Nightlife: The Scene (October 2009)

Halloween Parties 2009 Editor’s Picks, RF Lounge and more!

Good news, ladies!  Your favorite traveling girl party has found a new home. Beginning Wednesday, Oct 14, Eden moves to R-Bar, it’s sexiest venue yet. With a bordello-like vibe, black leather paneled interior and framed images of the ever-alluring female form adorning the walls, it’ll be hard not to get lucky. Reclaim hump day with two bars, VIP lounges, a state of the art sound and lighting systems, and the best part—four stripper poles! Yes, it’s like Christmas came early. It’s no surprise Eden has been named best lesbian party by New York Magazine the past two years in a row and GO Magazine’s pick for “Party With The Sexiest Vibe.” To celebrate the new location and the launch of MaggieCevents.com, Oct 14 will feature resident DJ SheRock while dancing go-go girls test out those poles.
Are you depressed summer is over? Have you been sitting at home in your sweatpants playing Second Life and following Lady Gaga on Twitter? You need some real friends. Real Friends Lounge, that is. This just-opened lesbian hangout gives you a reason to get out of bed seven days a week! From Monday night football’s free and tasty baked wings to GLEE Wednesdays with your gay boyfriends and Ladies’ Night Out on Friday, RF has it all. Plus, vino connoisseurs can do their happy dance, because RF will soon be opening their lounge/wine cellar. While not a full restaurant, they’ll have the perfect tapas-style pairing to accompany your selection. And, on Oct 31, after navigating the scary mob at the Halloween parade, stop in for less chaotic sexy fun at RF’s Halloween party! Prizes awarded to the two best costumes. If you couldn’t muster the holiday spirit to find a costume, it’s okay. You’ll still get a treat.
Who’s the greatest lez of all? You’re going to find out. On Oct 11th, Murray “Mr. Showbiz” Hill will present and host the 9th annual Miss Lez Pageant at Williamsburg’s brand new Knitting Factory. Don’t worry, feminists, this is not your average beauty pageant. This event gives queer womyn the opportunity to interpret what beauty and pageants mean to them. The six contestants will compete in talent, platform, swimsuit, evening gown and interview categories, with the winner receiving not only a Hitatchi Magic Wand (“the Cadillac of vibrators”) and cash prize, but also a cameo in Juicypinkbox.com’s next erotic lesbian film series and a breathtaking sash, bedazzled moments before the show! This spectacle of an event features performances by drag king favorites Switch ‘N Play, DJ Dirty Jean, Jen Urban and the Box, and one final appearance by last year’s winner, Sequinette. Celebrity judges include drag queen legend Linda Simpson, the Village Voice’s Michael Musto, former winner Glen Marla, BUST’s Emily Rems, Kate McKinnon from Logo’s Big Gay Sketch Show and GO’s own beloved Publisher/Lez-in-Chief, Amy Lesser. Yetta Kurland will present the Miss Congeniality title to that special contestant with the heart of gold who doesn’t quite grab the crown. With Murray’s showbiz razzle dazzle and outrageous fashion statements guaranteed from the contestants, this celebration of gender variance and lez beauty truly shouldn’t be missed.
