MUSIC

The very best of music including Junk "KAT" & Modiano; Kirsten Price; and Laura Cortese.

Electro/instrumental jazz group Junk “KAT” & Modiano hit the Blue Note on May 11. Multiple-genre flutist and composer Yael Acher (Modiano) and her band Junk “KAT” will showcased their diverse instrumentation and unique, “fringy” style in this legendary NYC jazz venue. The group’s moods and expressions vary from structured orchestration to funky freestyle, blending retro influences with a contemporary hip-hop vibe.

May 23, head over to Mercury Lounge for a performance by vocal siren/songwriter Kirsten Price. Her metaphoric and irresistibly catchy signature song "Magic Tree" is the lead track on the L Tunes: Music From and Inspired by The L Word compilation album. As one of the first two talents signed to Music with a Twist—the recently launched record label dedicated to identifying and developing LGBT artists—Kirsten is on the rise.

Melodic songstress Laura Cortese takes up residencies in May at Arlene’s Grocery and Pete’s Candy Store. Combining fresh melodies, heartfelt lyrics and the twang of a fiddle, Cortese creates a welcoming sound that is both modern and classic that is sure to carry through to the new album she’s currently working on. Laura’s last CD even the lost creek features a stunning array of original songs and a stellar cover of The Cure’s "Just Like Heaven.”
