On Monday, January 20, organizations across the country recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day with special events honoring his legacy.
MLK Day was signed into law as a federal holiday in 1983, 15 years after Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. He was one of the most prominent leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, known for leading the 1963 March on Washington and founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957.
There are various activities In New York City and New Jersey to celebrate the civil rights leader.
New York City
The Brooklyn Academy of Music is hosting its 39th Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. The free event is first-come, first-serve today at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. and will feature a speech by Carlotta Walls LaNier of the Little Rock Nine, a presentation by dance troupe Ailey II, and more.
If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids, The Brooklyn Children’s Museum is hosting a kid-friendly MLK Day celebration. Several activities will take place all day Monday, including art projects, a march around the museum, puppet making, and story time. All activities are included in museum admission.
The UJA-Federation of New York is holding its Annual MLK Day of Service with volunteer opportunities throughout the day and across the five boroughs. Help pack shelter donations, serve dinner to families, put together kits for asylum seekers, and more.
New Jersey
New Jersey Cares is hosting a two-day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. The organization is providing several virtual and in-person options for volunteers. Registration is still open.
The Newark Museum of Art‘s Community Day will honor Martin Luther King Jr. from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. This year’s theme, “Stronger Together,” reflects working together through service. There will be musical performances, dances, and art activities.
