Mary Oliver, Beloved Lesbian Poet, Dies At Age 83

RIP Mary Oliver.

It’s a sad day for lesbian literature lovers everywhere: Mary Oliver has passed away. She died of lymphoma at her home in Florida at the age of 83. Oliver was a prolific poet– she penned over 15 stunning poetry and essay collections. She won the Pulitzer in 1984 for “American Primitive” and the National Book Award in 1992 for “New and Selected Poems.”

Oliver was with her partner, photographer Molly Malone Cook for forty years. They lived in Provincetown until Cooke passed away in 2005. In an interview for Oprah Magazine, when she was asked about Cook’s death, Oliver answered simply, “I was very, very lonely.”

So many of us, including the GO team, have read and been touched by Oliver’s words. We are sending her family, her friends, and all the lovers of her gorgeous words, all of our love and good thoughts. RIP Mary Oliver.
