Lesbians Of New York City: A Photo Series

Photographer Mattie Provost asks, “What makes you happy?”

In Lesbians Of New York City, photographer Mattie Provost uses their unique style of documentary photography to explore themes of queerness and gender, interwoven with culture, memory, and identity. They see this project as a combination of personal narrative and universal storytelling. Mattie asks each subject, “What makes you happy?,” and, by doing so, creates a living archive of queer joy. No wish is too big and no love is too small to share. Mattie says it best: “I trace the threads of lesbian lineage—diverse, intergenerational, and alive—while honoring our right to not only be seen, but to be witnessed in motion, in becoming.” Mattie holds a BFA in Photography and Imaging from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Their work has been exhibited across the U.S.
