Country star Keith Urban has apparently been covering Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” at plenty of recent shows, but it’s his performance of the song at Mar-a-Lago with Donald Trump sitting in the room that has people feeling icked out online. The moment took place during a private holiday party hosted by Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt.

The videos, shared by attendees on Instagram, show Urban performing with an American flag graphic behind him. Another clip shows Trump at a table nearby.

The choice of song—an anthem about queer freedom and self-expression—is raising eyebrows for obvious reasons.

Urban has explained before why the track hits him emotionally. On the Canadian series Intimate and Interactive, he said he “almost cried” the first time he heard it and added, “Who doesn’t wanna find a safe place, wherever that is? You just wanna find your people — doesn’t matter what that is, just somewhere where you finally realize you belong there. God, that speaks to me.”

Pratt, the host, has been a major Trump booster. He donated $10 million to Trump’s 2024 campaign and pledged another $5 billion toward projects aligned with Trump’s manufacturing message. Trump was seated next to him throughout much of the night.

Urban, meanwhile, has been noncommittal about politics for years. Back in 2017, he told The Hill, “I would like to probably answer that question when it comes up, but I’m a citizen, and I like to do what’s right,” when asked about performing for Trump at the White House. More recently, he told The Times, “I play to extremely diverse audiences in every way, politically and pronoun, age groups, ethnicity.”

One Instagram user who reposted the video summed it up best, writing, “Well… I can’t help but wonder how @chappellroan feels about Kieth Urban singing her song at [Mar-a-Lago. Was that song choice ironic?”
