Ilana Glazer Says Pregnancy Highlighted Their Non-Binary Identity

August 13, 2024

"This gift of being pregnant made space for me to be real with myself."

Co-creator and star of hit comedy Broad City Ilana Glazer, who uses they/she pronouns, has opened up about their pregnancy and how it helped them realize they are a non-binary woman.

In a recent interview with The Independent, the 37 year old discussed their new film Babes, which follows Eden (Glazer) as she handles her unexpected pregnancy with help from her best friend Dawn (Michelle Buteau).

Glazer revealed the film was heavily influenced by her own experience being pregnant and figuring it out as they went along. The actor, who gave birth to their first child in 2021 with partner David Rooklin, said “being pregnant on paper was the most female thing I could ever do, but it actually highlighted both the masculine and feminine inside of me.”

“For so long, my masculinity felt like something I had to hide or make a joke of, and my femininity was something that felt like drag,” Glazer said. “There was always this element of comedy to it that was limiting my genuine personal experience.”

“Then this gift of being pregnant made space for me to be real with myself,” they continued.

Glazer has opened up about being non-binary in the past. After adding their pronouns to their Instagram bio earlier this year, they discussed their identity in an interview with USA Today in May.

“It was something that I thought was cool and hot and a part of me,” they told the outlet. “That was an interesting aspect of being a queer, birthing person.”

When asked by The Independent if their identity has changed anything in their day-to-day life, Glazer responded “It’s more a point in the process of a long journey of self-actualisation. I’m moving through the world in a way that’s truer.”

Babes is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime.
