Former Fox News host, Pete Hegseth, has a new title: Secretary of War. Apparently the job description involves taking orders from a social media hate group run by a former real estate agent. On Sept. 4, “Libs of TikTok” challenged Hegseth in a post on X that targeted military-decorated naval doctor, Janelle Marra:
“Yikes. This she/her Navy Commander is apparently a medical director for “transgender healthcare” at a Naval center in California. Can you please look into this? @PeteHegseth @DODResponse “
Within hours, Hegseth obeyed, tweeting: “Pronouns UPDATED: She/Her/Fired.”
“Libs of TikTok” responded with a laughing emoji.
Not surprising for a social media account that made Southern Poverty Law Center’s extremist hate watchlist, and that owes its roots to cowardice. Launched in the first year of Covid, Founder Chaya Raichik hid behind anonymity and multiple handles until Washington Post revealed her identity in 2022. The account lives to stir up right-wing outrage, and content serves as a direct feed to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham’s hunger for all things “gender identity radical.” Followers know Raichik for her “groomer” discourse, and bogus claims that schools installed bathroom litter boxes for children who identify as cats.

And yes, earlier this year, a Republican introduced a FURRIES Act in Texas to address the alleged toilet behavior. Could be amusing, were it not for the fact that these types of incitations are extremely harmful to actual humans. The influencer’s anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric has been repeatedly linked to calls for violence, including against children’s hospitals (accusations of gender-bending hysterectomies on kids).
As for Janelle Marra, she may not have been on the radar of the average American, but now she’s in the cross-hairs of an extremist hate group in a post with over 11 million views.
Bree Fram, a U.S. Space Force officer – herself ousted from the military for being trans – took to Facebook after the incident:
“Janelle Marra is an outstanding navy doctor who volunteered to serve and has done far more than this country asked of her. Throughout her career she has gone above and beyond what duty called for. She always went the extra mile to take care of others and ensure every service member was at their best to face the challenges in front of them.”
According to Defense Health Agency (DHA), Navy Cmdr. Janelle Marra began her Naval Service via the Health Professions Scholarship program in 2004. She attended medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her creds include training at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, serving as Regimental Surgeon for multiple Marine units and Senior Medical Officer at clinics that include the U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, and more.
Marra was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 Gold Stars and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal. She was recognized as the MHS Female Physician of the Year in 2018, and is Fleet Marine Force (FMF-O) qualified.
“Thousands of military members are living better lives today thanks to Dr. Marra,” Colonel Fram wrote. “Others are alive thanks to her. And this is the thanks she gets from her nation? She deserves better. She deserves respect for her sacrifices, not outrage over the fact that she cared for people.”
