GO-lympic Recap: Bisexual Skier Takes USA’s First Gold, USA Women’s Ice Hockey Wins Big, And More

Four days into the 2026 Winter Olympics and LGBTQ+ players are already making headlines.

The Milan Cortina Winter Olympics officially kicked off its opening ceremony on Friday, February 6. Less than a week into the games, and Team USA is already drawing attention. From the Women’s Ice Hockey team’s undefeated streak to back-to-back gold medals in the figure skating team event, USA is strong as ever.

Bisexual Skier Breezy Johnson Wins USA’s First Gold of the 2026 Olympics

Breezy Johnson takes her first gold in the women’s downhill, becoming the second US woman to win Olympic gold in this event. The first to do so was the legendary Lindsey Vonn (more on her in a moment). This win also marks Team USA’s first gold medal of the games.

Icon Lindsey Vonn Sustains Major Fracture 13 Seconds Into Her Run

Just 10 days after rupturing her left ACL in practice, USA’s Lindsay Vonn crashed 13 seconds into her event and was airlifted off the Olimpia Della Tofane. She is stable and doing okay, but reports say she will have to have multiple surgeries to fix the fracture in addition to the ACL tear. 

“I was simply 5 inches too tight on my line when my right arm hooked inside of the gate, twisting me and resulted in my crash,” she said on Instagram after Sunday’s crash. “My ACL and past injuries had nothing to do with my crash whatsoever.”

Team USA Wins Back-to-Back Gold Medals in Figure Skating Team Event

Team USA defeats Japan by 1 point to win gold in the figure skating team event. They became the first team to win consecutive gold medals in the team event and is the only country to have medaled in every Olympic team event since its debut in 2014. Bisexual skater Amber Glenn, who is a part of the team, additionally made headlines for speaking out about LGBTQ+ issues in the US, specifically citing President Trump’s administration.

USA Women’s Ice Hockey Is Crushing It

Team USA goes undefeated in preliminary rounds. Defeating Czechia 5-1, Finland in a 5-0 shutout, and Switzerland in ANOTHER 5-0 shutout. Hilary Knight (who is dating Team USA speedskater Brittany Bowe) is competing in her 5th Olympic games and has moved into a tie for the most career goals by an American in Olympic history with 14. Speaking of hockey history, of the 46 out LGBTQ+ Olympic athletes, 23 of them are on the women’s ice hockey teams. Can I get a “let’s go lesbians!”?

Speed Skater Brittany Bowe Edged Out of Medal by Six-Tenths of a Second

37-year-old Brittany Bowe was thiiiiis close to an Olympic medal in her fourth and final Olympic games. She placed 4th, with only a 0.6-second difference between her and bronze winner Miho Takagi from Japan. Bowe still holds the 1000m world record of 1:11.61, set in Salt Lake City on March 9, 2019.
