Felicia Day’s ‘The Guild’ Returns After Record-Breaking Kickstarter Campaign
The influential web series is back for a 20th anniversary celebration.
A Kickstarter launched this week with the hope of raising enough money to make a 20th anniversary movie of The Guild—and they hit their goal in just three hours.
The upcoming movie, currently titled The Guild: Ren Faire’d, initially set a goal of a whopping $1.5 million. As of publication, the amount raised has surpassed $2.6 million in under two days, breaking Kickstarter records.
It’s a staggering amount for an independent film, but not too surprising considering The Guild‘s rabid fanbase. The series, which followed a group of gamers getting involved in each other’s real lives, started on YouTube before migrating to other platforms. It was created by Felicia Day—who later went on to play fan favorite lesbian hacker Charlie Bradbury on Supernatural—and ran from 2007 to 2013. During that time, The Guild racked up a considerable following, playing an integral role in shaping the web series world in a largely pre-streaming era and ushering in the rise of nerdiness being kind of cool.
According to Day, the impetus for this return to The Guild after so many years is two-fold.
“When I realized the show’s 20th anniversary was coming up in 2027, I knew I needed to do something big to celebrate,” she said. “A Hollywood executive called me up at the beginning of 2025 to talk about ‘The Guild…Then they told me what they envisioned: A show re-tailored for gamers TODAY. With…younger actors.”
“And in that moment I knew I had to bring the cast together again and make a reunion movie,” she added.
Even back in its heyday, one of the things that made The Guild so successful was that it didn’t imagine gamers as fitting into one specific demographic. Filling it with a young cast would make an entirely different show; and one Day obviously wasn’t interested in pursuing.
Clearly, with over $2.6 million raised already, fans are supportive of that choice.
So instead, The Guild: Ren Faire’d will feature the entire original cast—Day, Sandeep Parikh, Jeff Lewis, Robin Thorsen, Vince Caso, and Amy Okuda—reprising their respective roles, along with guest stars Brett Sheridan, Tara Caso, and Wil Wheaton, all of whom appeared in the original show as well.
That era was still pretty light on LGBTQ+ characters on screen (The Guild was no exception), but the sheer number of gamers who identify as queer also meant that the show had a healthy LGBTQ+ fanbase, especially taking into consideration the theme of finding your place in the world.
For anyone interested in checking out the Kickstarter, there are a metric ton of cool rewards available for hardcore fans, from a brand new card game to something called “The Poopcorn Bucket.”
“We’re continuing to raise funds to make this THE BEST MOVIE WE POSSIBLY CAN!” reads a statement shared on Instagram promising more “surprises, reveals, and stretch goals” as the campaign continues.
