Demi Lovato Sings Out for Pride, Coast to Coast

The actor/singer/LGBT ally performs at Pride festivities in NYC and LA

It’s always a beautiful thing when our voices get heard (and sung) by celebs. Demi Lovato, the 21-year-old star of The X Factor and the chanteuse behind hits like “Neon Lights” and “Really Don’t Care” proves that she really does care—about the LGBT community, that is. In fact, she’s becoming a part of it. She’s performing this June at Pride fests on both coasts.

On June 8, Lovato headed to the West Coast to lead the Los Angeles Pride Parade as Grand Marshal, in addition to rocking a special performance sporting rainbow hair. Later this month, the songstress heads to the East Coast, where she’ll headline NYC Pride’s Dance on the Pier in Tribeca on June 29, the day after the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that launched the modern gay rights movement.

“It’s such an honor to be a part of both L.A. and NYC Pride celebrations this year,” said Lovato. “I have been an active advocate of the LGBT community, and am wholly committed to supporting individuality and being comfortable in one’s own skin. I am thrilled to be a part of both events, as they are a wonderful celebration of independence and self-confidence.”

Last year, Lovato participated in GLAAD’s Spirit Day, using her talented voice to stand against bullying and support LGBT teens and young adults. She also played a lesbian on Glee. Her character Dani was the same-sex love interest of Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera). In one episode, Dani purrs to Santana, “I think you need a 100 percent Sapphic goddess.” Discussing her role as Dani, Lovato said, “It’s not about the scandal aspect [of kissing a girl] …it’s about two young women that are falling in love, and I think that’s really beautiful.”

So, we can’t help asking ourselves: Is Demi Lovato just bicoastal—or does some other “bi” word apply?

Last fall, salicious rumors went flying when Ruby Rose, an Australian DJ, declared that she’d slept with the star, and exposed their hookup via Twitter and Instagram. “I’m like the one person Demi has slept with that didn’t sell naked photos of her,” she wrote. (How noble of you, Ruby.) Indeed, another woman had leaked nude pics two months earlier. About her alleged bisexuality, Lovato has said nada, and her representatives have simply stated, “No comment on this sort of conjecture.”

Hmmm. Well, who cares who she sleeps with. Lovato is an incredible talent and a loyal supporter of the LGBT community—and that’s enough for us. We welcome her amazing voice and her open, beaming presence at Pride this year. Rock on, Demi!
