Chappell Roan is no stranger to news-worthy attention. Sold-out shows, viral performances, and a rapidly growing fanbase have put her squarely in the spotlight. But alongside the rise has come criticism: fans are calling out (once again) what they see as a disconnect between enjoying fame and avoiding the public that fuels it.

The latest controversy? A hotel breakfast in Brazil that spiraled into something way bigger.

Brazilian soccer player Jorginho Frello took to Instagram to share a story involving his wife, Irish singer Catherine Harding, and his 11-year-old stepdaughter—who’s biological father is British Actor, Jude Law—during their trip to Lollapalooza Brazil.

According to Jorginho, the family and Roan were staying at the same hotel while she was in town to perform. His stepdaughter, a big fan, noticed Roan at breakfast. He says the girl simply walked past Roan’s table, smiled to herself, and kept moving—just trying to confirm it was really her.

Then things escalated.

As Jorginho describes it, a security guard approached his wife and daughter in an aggressive manner, accusing the child of harassment. He wrote:

“a large security guard came over to their table while they were simply having breakfast and began speaking in an aggressive manner to both my wife and daughter, saying that she shouldn’t allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people…he said he would file a complaint against them with the hotel, while my 11-year-old daughter was sitting there in tears.”

He added that his daughter was left “shaken and cried a lot.”

Jorginho acknowledged that he understands boundaries as he’s also a public figure, but said the situation felt completely mishandled, especially given that it involved a child who never actually approached or interacted with Roan. He tagged the singer directly, calling the situation “sad” and emphasizing that fans are the reason celebrities have platforms in the first place. He ended by saying he hopes it serves as a moment of reflection, because no one—especially a child—should experience something like that.

The internet then spiraled over a fake instagram story post—allow me to repeat, fake—that wrote “I want to start by saying that I have always been very clear about my boundaries…I deserve my space, especially in breakfast. I don’t play about my breakfast…respectfully please understand that boundaries are not personal, they are necessary.”

Roan’s response was actually a video clarifying that she had no direct involvement in the interaction. She said she didn’t “see a woman and a child. No one came up to me. No one bothered me.” According to her, the security guard in question was not part of her personal team, and she did not ask anyone to confront the family.

“It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions.”

She did, however, acknowledge that the situation was handled poorly. She stated that she doesn’t believe the child did anything wrong, pushed back on claims that she dislikes fans, and apologized directly to Catherine and her daughter, saying they didn’t deserve to feel uncomfortable or be treated that way.

“I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children. That is crazy. It makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.”

Then came Catherine Harding’s response.

In a video, Harding said she couldn’t confirm whether Roan personally sent the guard, but argued that celebrities still hold responsibility for how people act on their behalf.

“Would he do that if he didn’t have the authority to do so? I don’t know.”

She added that, regardless, the guard was representing Roan in a way that didn’t align with how she’d want to be represented.

Harding also backed up her husband’s account of events. She explained that they noticed someone with red hair, wondered if it was Roan, and her stepdaughter walked past the table briefly to check. Not even a conversation—just curiosity. They then continued their breakfast.

Moments later, the security guard intervened.

Harding described his approach as intimidating, especially toward a woman and a child:

“I am a paying guest [of the hotel] and so is she. If I want to walk past a table, I have every right to do so. I am not…doing anything to make her feel intimidated…it’s an 11-year-old child.”

She ended the video on a more emotional note, explaining that the trip was meant to be a birthday gift for her daughter, who had traveled all the way there to see Roan perform. After the incident, they chose not to attend the show.

The saga continues…

One of the first things Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Cavaliere did on his literal first day in office, was ban Roan from performing there… because that’s a pressing issue Rio faces.

He announced on twitter:

“I mean that as long as I’m in charge of our city – this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio!”

Despite the Mayor’s statement, Roan still received roaring applause from the Brazilian crowd on the night of Frello’s original post.

Social Media, of course, has not held back on their thoughts about the whole situation.

GO Readers, what do you all think of this controversy? Is this a case of rich people not being able to take No for answer or is it Chappell Roan’s duty to ensure all fans feel welcomed by her, even on her days off.
