‘Agatha All Along’ Stars Hail The New Show As A “Gay Explosion”

September 18, 2024

Even Patti LuPone is in it.

Agatha All Along stars Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, and Joe Locke are celebrating the Disney+ series for being the “gayest project Marvel has ever done.”

At Monday’s LA premiere, the cast and producers discussed the groundbreaking LGBTQ+ representation that was so integral to the show. Hahn, who reprises her role as the powerful witch Agatha Harkness, explains the show’s ability to present gay characters and storylines, without making it the focus of the show.

“What is the most exciting thing about it is is that’s not exactly what it’s about,” she said, according to Variety. “It’s so normalized.”

Heartstopper star Joe Locke, who plays Teen, added, “It’s got many layers and gay is one of them. That’s one of the great things about the show. … Teen is a queer guy on the show, but it’s not the driving force, which I think is really great. It’s really nice to just have these positive queer characters.”

The series is set to follow Agatha, who finds herself powerless after a “suspicious goth teen” helps break her free from a spell. The two hastily put together a coven and head on an adventure down the legendary Witches’ Road to find what they’re looking for. Agatha All Along is a spin-off from the 2021 series WandaVision, where Hahn first took on the role, and is expected to continue the same canon storyline.

Along with Locke, who publicly came out in 2023 in a TeenVogue interview, the show boasts multiple queer actors. Sasheer Zamata, the SNL alum who will portray Jennifer Kale in the series, labeled herself as queer in an interview with Them earlier this month.

“Witches are queer, inherently, just because we are outcasts and set aside for many reasons,” Zamata said during the premiere. “This show shows a really good representation of different types of people and that we can all use the power we have within to go forward and be great.”

Aubrey Plaza, who has been open about her bisexuality since 2016, called the show a “gay explosion.” Plaza’s character, warrior witch Rio Vidal, had a heavily-hinted at romance with Agatha, which stand to be explored in the series.

The Diplomat‘s Ali Ahn, who plays Alice Wu-Gulliver, called Agatha All Along the ” gayest show on Marvel.”

“There is a lot of pageantry we’re already competing with,” she said. “I think the thing that makes it more gay is that we are singing with Patti.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Patti LuPone is making her Marvel debut as Lila Calderu.

The series drops on September 18 on Disney+.
