100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Estelle Freedman

Estelle Freedman is best known for her monumental study of the past and future role of feminism titled, No Turning Back: The History of Feminism and the Future of Women. A United States historian specializing in women’s history and feminist studies, Freedman has taught at Stanford University since 1976 and is
co-founder of the University’s Program in Feminist Studies. With a Ph.D and M.A. in history from Columbia University, her research interests include the history of women and social reform, including feminism and prison reform, as well as the history of sexuality. Her most recent book, The Essential Feminist Reader, is an edited anthology of 64 primary documents of feminist history from around the world. Her contributions to teaching have been recognized with the Dinkelspiel Award for Outstanding Service to Undergraduate Education, the Rhodes Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Kahn-Van Slyke Graduate Mentoring Award. -KD
