Rosanna Flamer-Caldera
After 15 years in the U.S., International Lesbian and Gay Association Co-Secretary General Rosanna Flamer-Caldera returned to her native Sri Lanka to do environmental conservation work and then LGBT activism in Colombo, where she helped found Women’s Support Group, Sri Lanka’s first and only lesbian advocacy organization. In 2002, she was a main organizer of IGLA’s first Asia Regional Conference. In 2004, she founded Equal Ground, the only mixed LGBT organization in Sri Lanka—an immeasurable service in a country where LGBT people have been murdered by extremist militias. “Human rights and equality for all is non-negotiable,” she insists, “and it is our job to ensure that everyone on this planet understands this.” Besides being one of the world’s foremost human rights activists, Flamer-Caldera still found time to organize Colombo’s PRIDE 2008 and perform in the biggest drag show the event has ever seen. –MF
