Olivia Miles Breaks Caitlin Clark’s Rookie Scoring Record
The Lynx guard set the new rookie record for points scored in a season with 790 points and counting.
During Sunday’s Minnesota Lynx game against the Connecticut Sun, WNBA rookie Olivia Miles officially broke Caitlin Clark’s record for points by a rookie in a season.
The Lynx guard scored 21 points in their win over Connecticut and came into the game tied with Clark at 769 points. A free throw in the second quarter officially pushed her atop the rookie scoring list finishing the game with 790 points.
“It’s special, but it means we’re more so working well as a team. I have great teammates around me, great vets who allow me to be me out there,” Miles told ESPN. “It wouldn’t be possible without one, a coach that believes in you and then two, having teammates that have my back. So it’s really special to obviously be able to accomplish that with such a great team and on a win as well.”
This isn’t the first record the rookie has broken in her first season. Her eight 3-points in the Lynx’s victory over the Valkyrie set the rookie record for 3-pointers in a game surpassing Clark’s seven, and Miles became the fastest player to record 350 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists in 21 games, one game quicker than Clark. Miles also surpassed both Clark and Paige Bueckers to become the fastest player to reach 500 points and 150 assists in just 26 games.
Records aren’t just getting broken by the Lynx. Also on Sunday, A’ja Wilson became the first WNBA player to score 1,000 points in two separate seasons. This record breaking season has yet to slow down and with so much talent in the league, it’s still a toss up as to who will walk away with the championship this year.
