Portland Sports Bar Ejects Group Over Anti-Trans Apparel
The same group was also kicked out of a soccer match.
A group of anti-trans sports fans are whining on the internet after their intentionally inflammatory shirts got them kicked out of both a soccer match and a sports bar in Portland, Oregon.
Over the weekend, Amy Sousa, who describes herself on X as a “modern day gender abolitionist,” shared footage of her and her friends being asked to leave The Sports Bra, a pointedly LGBTQ+ friendly bar dedicated to women’s sports.
According to the employee, the group’s “XX-XY” shirts—a brand geared towards those against trans inclusion in sports—was making other customers uncomfortable. Per the video, the group argued against leaving while the employee remained calm and repeatedly asked them to go.
The incident took place not long after the same group was ejected from a soccer match between the Portland Thorns and Washington Spirit. The Thorns’ official statement claimed that the group was kicked out for “distributing unapproved materials,” although Sousa disputes the claim. She also shared a video in which she confronted a stadium employee who said he had been made aware of something “transphobic.”
Getting kicked out of two locations back-to-back over shirts that are clearly intended to pushback against trans-inclusion in sports and immediately posting multiple videos about it immediately reeked of attention seeking to people online.
“This is trash content and as a conservative I’m embarrassed for you. You don’t go into a place like that and behave in that manner. Go be obnoxious somewhere else,” one X user replied.
“You actively went there to provoke, and you were kicked out as soon as they realized it,” said another.
“It’s not a coincidence you specifically chose this bar to go in all specifically wearing those shirts,” reads a third response. “You wanted to get this video right here, you wanted this reaction. Fuck off with the coy act “what are we doing wrong?” Fuckin loser people with nothing better to do.”
While Sousa has continued to act clueless as to why a private business would refuse her service over inflammatory apparel, The Sports Bra has issued a statement of their own regarding the matter.
“At The Sports Bra, our mission is simple: support, promote, and empower ALL girls and women in sports. To be clear: trans girls are girls, and trans women are women,” they wrote. “On Sunday, Sept 6, a group entered wearing apparel with messages advocating for the exclusion of trans women from sports. When our team respectfully gave the group the choice to cover the anti-trans messaging or leave, they chose to leave.
