Cynthia Nixon Will Officiate ‘World’s Largest’ Sapphic Wedding in Florida
The Gilded Age and Just Like That… star looks to set a new world record.
Multi-hyphenate creative Cynthia Nixon will be officiating St. Petersburg Winter Pride’s special event, “Bride Pride St. Pete — The World’s Largest All-Girl Wedding & Renewal Ceremony,” as a “Reverend-for-the-Day.”
The ceremony — open to weddings and vow renewals — will be held in the St. Petersburg neighborhood of Grand Central District on February 21, according to The Tampa Bay Times.
The paper reports that if 100 couples either wed or renew their vows, the ceremony could be recognized by Guinness World Records.
“At a time when visibility and community matter more than ever, Bride Pride creates a beautiful and joyful public celebration of love,” Nixon, the activist, director, and actor who currently stars in HBO’s The Gilded Age, said in a statement reported by the Times. “I’m honored to help bring these couples together in such a meaningful and historic way.”
Nixon has been married to her wife Christine Marinoni since 2014.
In recent years, Florida has, at times, led the charge in anti-LGBTQ+ state laws. It has introduced an anti-trans bathroom law and was the first state to pass a “Don’t Say Gay” law, restricting LGBTQ+ topics and conversations in public schools.
Bride Pride events began 10 years ago in Provincetown, Massachusetts. This will be the third iteration. St. Petersburg’s event has been organized by local couple Ilene Mitnick and Allison Baldwin, who were the original founders of the event. They plan to renew their vows, according to CL Tampa Bay.
“With the world feeling increasingly polarized, choosing to celebrate love and community becomes even more meaningful,” Mitnick said, according to theTimes. “We’re on a mission to create joy, build connection and remind people that love will always have the power to unite us.”
The Times reports that it will cost $150 per couple to register for the inclusive event. Couples who want to be married also need to pay an $86 marriage license fee before the ceremony.
February’s Bride Pride will be part of the city’s larger Winter Pride celebration. The event is sponsored by inclusive brand TomboyX and media outlets Out, The Advocate, and them.
“We warmly welcome cisgender women, lesbians, masc lesbians, bisexual women, transgender women, and non-binary people who feel that Bride Pride reflects who they are and that this celebration is for them,” co-founder Baldwin told CL Tamba Bay.
