A heist never looked so good! Neon Films just dropped the trailer for Boots Riley’s new film, I Love Boosters, where style meets crime. Led by Corvette (Keke Palmer), a team of professional shoplifters (boosters) set their sights on emptying out every high-end designer in the Bay Area.
“It’s like community service,” says Sade (Naomi Ackie), with a nod to The Velvet Gang’s mission: resell the goods and turn a profit on the streets.
Writer and Director Boots Riley (Sorry to Bother You) tried to keep the cast a secret, but couldn’t resist an IG reveal one day before the teaser release:
“We were keeping it a surprise, but then we thought F— THE SURPRISE,” he wrote. “Don Cheadle is also in this, and he’s brilliant.”
We couldn’t be happier to see a few queers in the mix. Keke Palmer, who first stole hearts in 2006 in Akeelah and the Bee, takes the lead. The actress has openly identified as sexually fluid (“in the middle of the scale”). Palmer shared in The Best Podcast Ever that as a teen, she suppressed her sexuality out of fear of being an outcast, but eventually, was able to grow into herself. “By the time I was 17 or 18, I wanted to explore my life,” she said on the pod. Today, accepting all parts of herself is how she’s brought love to her life.
Poppy Liu, who identifies as a queer, nonbinary first-generation Chinese American, scored a SAG nom for their work in Hacks—and days ago, some love from Boots Riley who took to IG: “Poppy!!!!! You go f*cking hard in the paint. You are hilarious (in real life and on screen) brought so much life to Jianhu. I am so honored to be a collaborator of yours.” Liu gained a following for her work in Sunnyside, iCarly, Dead Ringers, The Afterparty, and No Good Deed.
The ensemble rounds out with Taylour Paige (who once sparked dating rumors with Zoë Kravitz after a cryptic IG post), alongside Eiza González, LaKeith Stanfield, and Will Poulter. They are joined by Hollywood veteran Demi Moore who plays a cutthroat fashion maven targeted by the chic-minded thieves. “They take my s**t and sell it because they’re low-class urban bi***es — with all due respect to urban bi***es,” Moore’s maven character says.
