MAGA Republican Nancy Mace Introduces “Tr*ns Mice Act”

The SC Rep who introduced anti-trans bathroom bill for US Capitol claims spot as godmother of ‘woke’ trans mice mania

This week, SC Rep Nancy Mace took a premature victory lap on X, “We introduced the Tr*ns Mice Act to ensure federal dollars are directed toward real priorities for our country, not wasteful and inhumane experiments. Hold the Line.”

It seems that Mace, who had once claimed to be “pro-transgender rights,” has suddenly stopped spelling out the word “trans”, choosing instead, to sub in an asterisk for a vowel despite her intense focus on the trans community throughout her time in office and her history of confidently using anti-trans slurs on the House Floor. But that’s not stopping her crusade as the bill moves through the legislative process.

Officially titled, “The Transgender Research on Animals Now Stops and Money for Ideological Cruelty Eliminated Act,” Mace introduced the bill on July 25th. It prohibits federal funds for studying the “affects of drugs, hormones, surgery, or other interventions to alter the body of a qualified animal to no longer correspond to the biological sex of such animal…”

The bill specifies that “non-qualified” animals, which are described as “non-human vertebrates” that change sex during their lifetime or that “naturally” possess “both male and female reproductive organs,” will still be viable for scientific experimentation.

Prohibitions for “qualified animals” or any non-human species such as mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians, include “modifying the physical appearance of an animal” (not unlike the Masquerade laws of yore that forbade wearing clothing associated with another gender).

But are trans mice even a thing?

The anti-woke mice movement got traction back in March when Trump claimed that the Biden Administration had spent $8 million “for making mice transgender.” The unfounded claim had scientists, pundits and late night comedians assuming he had confused transgender with transgenic (genetically altered).

In reality, the studies targeted would have produced data helpful to both trans and CIS people. The research included Effects of Gender-affirming Hormone Therapy on HIV Vaccine-induced Immune Responses; Impacts of testosterone on fertility; Gender-Affirming Testosterone Therapy on Breast Cancer Risk and Treatment Outcomes and the effects of sex hormones on asthma.

This isn’t the first time Nancy Mace has fixated on furry creatures (not to be confused with furries). According to a statement issued by the congresswoman’s office, earlier this year, she chaired a House Oversight hearing titled “Transgender Lab Rats and Poisoned Puppies: Oversight of Taxpayer-Funded Animal Cruelty.” She lays claim to “revealing” that at least $241 million in federal funds had been spent on gender-transition experiments involving animals.

For a finishing PR touch, Mace quotes Justin Goodman, the Senior Vice President of Advocacy at notorious right-wing anti-animal testing activist group White Coat Waste Project, who sings her praises (and the praises of his own White Coat organization): “Thanks to the outstanding leadership of Rep. Nancy Mace and White Coat Waste’s viral investigations, the Trump Administration has slashed spending on wasteful experiments that subject lab animals to invasive surgeries and hormone therapies to crudely mimic gender transitions in kids and adults—only to later wound, shock and inject the animals with viruses, vaccines and overdoses of sex-party drugs.”
