Marriage Equality Activists Stop Traffic in Midtown Manhattan

March 1, 2011

Police on Tuesday arrested eight members of Queer Rising after their marriage equality protest disrupted rush-hour traffic

Police arrested eight members of the direct-action organization Queer Rising after their marriage equality protest disrupted rush-hour traffic this morning.

Unfurling a 75-foot yellow banner with the phrase “NY demands marriage equality now!” across the intersection of 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue, all eight activists were taken into custody minutes after forcing traffic to a grinding halt.

“We do not enjoy inconveniencing drivers on their hectic morning commute,” said Queer Rising member Jake Goodman, one of those arrested. “But we less enjoy living without the 1,324 protections and rights granted by state-recognized marriage. We only hope others stop the routine of their everyday lives to join us and demand marriage equality now.”

The seven other arrested activists, according to a statement released after the incident, include Kevin Beauchamp, Nora Camp, Natasha Dillon, Frostie Flakes (a.k.a. Adam Siciliano), Honey LaBronx (aka Ben Strothmann), Eugene Lovendusky and Kitten Withuwhip (aka Caldwell).
