Jennifer Beals, & Other Celebs Go ‘Silent’ To Support LGBTQ+ Students

April 21, 2021

“Over 4 out of 5 #LGBTQ students don’t see positive LGBTQ+ representation in their curriculum, nearly 9 in 10 experience harassment or assault, and almost a third miss school because they feel unsafe or unwelcome.”

Jennifer Beals, Danielle Panabaker, and the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” are among the celebrities posting “silent” videos in honor of Day of Silence, which is Friday, April 23rd.

Beals, who posted her video to Instagram, included the message, “Over 4 out of 5 #LGBTQ students don’t see positive LGBTQ+ representation in their curriculum, nearly 9 in 10 experience harassment or assault, and almost a third miss school because they feel unsafe or unwelcome.”

Day of Silence, which is sponsored by the advocacy group, GLSEN, is a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ+-identifying students and allies take a vow of silence to protest unfair treatment, bullying, and continued harassment in schools. Those taking part in the demonstration go the day without speaking before reclaiming their voices in Breaking the Silence rallies at the day’s conclusion. During these rallies, they are encouraged to share their experiences and suggestions for ways to make their environments more accepting and inclusive.
