Mexico’s Largest State Approves Marriage Equality

The congress of the State of Mexico, which includes parts of Mexico City’s metropolitan area and the surrounding region, voted to approve same-sex marriage on Tuesday, making the state the 29th in the country to do so.

In another win for marriage equality, Mexico’s largest state has approved same-sex marriage.

The congress of the State of Mexico, which includes parts of Mexico City’s metropolitan area and the surrounding region, voted to approve same-sex marriage on Tuesday, making the state the 29th in the country to do so. Lawmakers approved the measure by a vote of 50 for to 16 against, Reuters reports

“Today, by becoming the 29th state to approve equal marriage, we will be reducing inequality, and letting the country know that in the State of Mexico we do not leave anybody behind,” said Paola Jiménez, a state legislator, following the vote, the AP reports

Although same-sex marriage is not legal throughout all of Mexico, it is legal in all but three of the country’s 32 states. Mexico City was the first to recognize same-sex marriage in 2009.

Same-sex marriage has been legalized in over 30 countries worldwide, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Uruguay in Central and South America. Cuba also joined this list in September, when voters approved a referendum to legalize same-sex marriage.

Chile legalized same-sex marriage in December 2021. It first same-sex couple married in March of this year.

Slovenia also recently joined the list of countries that have legalized same-sex marriage, following a vote in the country’s Parliament in early October. Slovenia became the first country in Eastern Europe, where LGBTQ+ rights remain limited, to legalize same-sex marriage.

Switzerland — one of the last countries in Western Europe to do so — legalized same-sex marriage  following a referendum vote in September 2021. Same-sex couples were allowed to marry starting in July of this year.
