Lil Nas X won big at last night’s VMA awards, snagging the top prize in three categories.
“Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” the title track from the artist’s upcoming EP, was named Video of the Year, and also scored wins in both Best Direction and Best Visual Effect categories.
“First, I want to say thank you to the gay agenda. Let’s go gay agenda!” Lil Nas X joked when accepting the Video of the Year prize. “I do not take this [the award] for granted.”

In addition to his wins, the artist also performed “Montero” and his other single, “Industry Baby” at last night’s awards show, appearing on stage first in a band costume before stripping down to a pair of fuchsia hot pants as the performance progressed. He was joined on stage by a squadron of underwear-clad male backup dancers.
“Montero” became an instant hit when it dropped earlier this year. The video, which openly expresses the out artist’s sexuality, features Lil Nas X riding a stripper pole to hell and providing Satan with a lap dance.
The EP, “Montero” drops on September 17. Earlier this month, the artist released a “baby registry” ahead of the album’s release, which he referred to as “My little bundle of joy.” The registry was accompanied by the names of all 15 songs on the album, along with the names of grassroots LGBTQ+ organizations and charities that followers can donate to.
