Black/Queer/Abstract: A convening on the occasion of Julie Mehretu

Wednesday, July 28 from 10:00am to 5pm

Inspired by Julie Mehretu’s multidisciplinary practice and guided by her interests, this day-long convening gathers together artists and thinkers across disciplines whose work engages with Black and Queer radical thought through forms of abstraction. The event seeks to mobilize the power of imaginative thinking and to celebrate a collective project of world building.

Bridging the arts, humanities, and sciences, the program presents broad conversations between artists and scholars who are at the forefront of their fields and who form a creative network with which Mehretu’s work is in dialogue.

The convening is organized on the occasion of the exhibition Julie Mehretu. Comprising approximately thirty paintings and forty works on paper dating from 1996 to the present day, this mid-career survey of Julie Mehretu presents the most comprehensive overview of her practice to date revealing how forces such as migration, capitalism, and climate change impact human populations.

The Julie Mehretu exhibition will be open for viewing for registered participants.

The event can also be accessed virtually. Register for Livestream.

The health and safety of our guests and staff is our top priority. Prior to entry, the Museum will require that registered guests provide evidence of a recent negative COVID test (within 72 hours) or completion of a COVID-19 vaccination series (at least 14 days prior to the event).
