In the 1980s we knew her as Chris Cagney, the tough and sassy half of TV’s Cagney and Lacey; she was the colorful, unapologetic PFLAG mom Debbie Novotny on Queer as Folk. Today, actor Sharon Gless takes on the brave title role in the new independent film Hannah Free. While a longtime activist on behalf of the LGBT community, this is the first time that Gless has played a lesbian character—a woman in the Depression-era midwest who travels the world while leaving her lover, a traditional homemaker, behind to deal with her own confused sexuality. Gless’s performance in Hannah Free reaffirms her act- ing prowess, her unassuming style, and her considerable creative sensibilities.
