Trump Nominates Tammy Bruce For Deputy UN Ambassador
The prominent right-wing voice and openly gay figure was nominated despite already having a position in the state department.
On Saturday, August 9, Trump announced he was nominating Tammy Bruce, a spokeswoman for the United States Department of State, as the next representative of the United States to the United Nations.
The announcement came from a post on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, where he said Bruce had done a “fantastic” job as a spokesperson of the State Department and will “brilliantly” represent the United States at the United Nations.
“So grateful for @POTUS’s trust in nominating me as the Deputy Representative of the US at the UN,” Bruce responded in a post on X. “I’ve been honored to serve as @StateDept Spokesperson, and now I’m blessed that in the next few weeks my commitment to advancing America First leadership and values continues on the global stage in this new post.”
Since January, Bruce has served as the State Department’s spokeswoman, where she has been at the forefront of press briefings on the administration’s foreign policy. She has defended the administration’s support for Israel, their withdrawal from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and for putting dozens of employees from the U.S Agency for International Development on paid leave.
The United Nations deputy ambassador position requires Senate confirmation, and it is still unclear who would replace Bruce as State Department spokesperson. Previously to Bruce’s nomination, Trump had nominated Michael Waltz. Waltz previously served as the national security advisor, but was removed from the position after accidentally adding a journalist to a confidential group chat about military operations. As of now, Waltz is still awaiting confirmation from the Senate. With this new addition to nominate Bruce, if they’re both confirmed, Bruce would serve under Waltz and perform his UN ambassador role if absent.
Before she joined the Trump administration, Bruce was a Fox News Contributor. And before she was a right-wing figure, she was formerly a democrat, where she became the first openly gay woman in the country to host a radio talk show, The Tammy Bruce Show. She was later fired from her radio job after she protested O.J. Simpson’s 1995 acquittal, and in 2000 began pivoting to conservatism after writing an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times, defending Dr. Laura Schlessinger for referring to homosexuality as “deviant” and “a biological error.” She’s also been a vocal anti-trans figure, where she has shared articles that spread misinformation about the trans community.
