The Professional Women’s Hockey League is only three years old, but its first week of the new season delivered the kind of scenes that signal big things to come. During Ottawa’s recent home game, an in-game fan interview turned into an unexpected proposal, and it was definitely a crowd pleaser.
Two fans, Theresa and Dani, were speaking with the host when the interview suddenly took a personal turn. Addressing the crowd, Theresa said, “I love this community, I love everything that’s been given to us,” adding, “and I can’t think of a better moment to ask Dani…” She then knelt and presented a ring, prompting an immediate reaction from the stands as spectators recognized they were witnessing a proposal for the ages.

Ottawa’s performance on the ice also delivered a story worth noting. Team captain Brianne Jenner, an out athlete long regarded as one of the league’s most reliable offensive players, matched the PWHL record for most points in a single game with four.
Elsewhere in the league, the matchup between the Minnesota Frost and the Seattle Torent produced two major attendance milestones. The game set a new United States record for the highest attended women’s hockey game in an arena, surpassing the previous mark held by an NCAA matchup, and also established the highest attendance for a professional women’s hockey game in the country. For Seattle, a first year franchise, the turnout hinted at significant untapped interest in women’s hockey in emerging markets.

The strong season opening came as the PWHL advances its broader expansion strategy. The league grew from six to eight teams this season and is preparing for its December Takeover Tour, a slate of 16 neutral site games designed to measure interest in cities that do not yet have a franchise. Stops will include Chicago, Dallas, Detroit and Denver, with the league planning to use the resulting data as it evaluates the addition of up to four new teams as early as next season.
