In a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, Doechii was asked about her track “Denial Is A River” (if you haven’t watched this absolute masterpiece of a performance, do yourself a favor and click here). The song features a line about her ex-boyfriend cheating on her with a man:
Just to get a DM from his wifey
I was so confused, what should Doechii do?
She didn’t know about me and I didn’t know ’bout Sue
I open up the messages, then had to hit the zoom
Turns out the girl was really a dude (goddamn)
The title of the song, she revealed, was inspired by the legendary Wendy Williams, who once said, “Denial is a river in Egypt, your husband is gay!” During the interview, Charlamagne tha God asked Doechii how she felt when she found out her boyfriend was cheating with a guy. Doechii’s response made it crystal clear that her disappointment wasn’t about the cheating with a man—it was about the dishonesty.
“I mean, that [his sexuality] was never the problem,” she said. “I think the problem was that you cheated on me. You also coulda let me know up front, you know, what your style was.
“I’m bisexual. That’s cool. I’ve dated bisexual men. Let me know what it is up front,” she added.
Doechii continued to emphasize that sexuality is fluid and doesn’t come with a list of rules, especially when it comes to bisexuality. “I’ve dated bisexual men; no problem,” she said. “Just be upfront about it. Who cares if it’s a man or a woman?”
And just when you thought it couldn’t get better, Doechii had more to say about the common biphobic narrative that bisexuality is somehow only “acceptable” for women. To that, she responded: “I don’t see it that way. Sexuality is fluid, and I really don’t give a damn.”
Her words really struck a chord on TikTok, where fans were all over the comments, applauding her for speaking out on such an important topic. One person wrote, “Everything is a social construct!” while another cheered, “We need to stop this narrative that [cheating is] worse if it’s with someone of the same sex.”
Of course, not everything in Doechii’s love life is drama-filled. She’s currently happily in a relationship with her girlfriend, and the two are thriving together. When the hosts threw in the question—“Does she trust you?”—possibly referring to the stereotype that bi folks are untrustworthy—Doechii clapped back with grace and humor. “Oh my god, damn! Yeah, I would hope so!” she laughed, totally unfazed by the awkward moment.
Fans didn’t hold back, calling out the hosts’ ignorance in the comments: “The ‘does she trust you?’ pissed me off so bad, how dare you,” one fan wrote. “She handled that weird question so well,” added another. Honestly, we couldn’t agree more.
“Denial Is A River” is part of Doechii’s Grammy-nominated mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, which is streaming everywhere.
