Australian religious groups that receive public funds can now legally ban gay and lesbian couples from fostering children, after a landmark tribunal ruling.

The ruling ends a seven-year battle for a gay couple whose attempt to foster a child through the group Wesley Mission Australia was rejected because of the Uniting Church’s stance against homosexuality.
