In a repeat from his first term, Donald Trump has already begun stripping protections from LGBTQ+ Americans.

“It’s official: Our government’s legislation banning the despicable and degrading practice of conversion therapy has received Royal Assent – meaning it is now law,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted in a message on Twitter.

The President “has signed executive orders,” Psaki said, referring to measures President Biden has taken to protect transgender and other LGBQ+ persons. “He’s also used the power of the bully pulpit in his presidency to convey that transgender rights are human rights. And that is his belief and the view of his administration, and how he expects policies to be implemented.”

The bill is set to become law on July 1. 

The announcement signals the department’s move away from the policies of the Trump administration, where directives often gave executive branch agencies license to discriminate based on sexual identity and orientation.

Virginia is set to become the first state in the South to offer LGBTQ civil rights protections after lawmakers passed the Virginia Values Act.
