“While the Alabama Legislature avoided passing this poorly designed bill, and we should all celebrate this victory for transgender people, for human rights, and for the state of Alabama, we know that this is not the last attack we will see on the transgender community.”

“I don’t have that experience exactly myself right now,” Governor Jim Justice replied when asked by anchor Stephanie Ruhle to cite an example of a trans athlete trying to gain a competitive advantage by joining a girls’ sport team.

“As I watch the movement of these bills attacking trans youth across the US, especially this week in Florida, Alabama, Texas, and North Dakota, I am thinking of my trans siblings and the collective pain that our community must endure to battle again and again for our right to exist.”

The “Youth Health Protection Act” would prevent physicians from performing gender-affirming surgeries, including “top” and “bottom” procedures, and from providing puberty blocks and hormone treatments to any trans patient under 21.

HB 1570 would prohibit physicians from providing hormones and puberty blockers for trans minors, a restriction which opponents say would adversely affect trans youth. 

In a news conference, Hutchinson referred to the bill as an example of “vast government overreach,” and that trans minors “deserve the guiding hand of their parents and of the health care professionals that their family has chosen.” 

The bill is set to become law on July 1.
