In a statement shared with the press, Alhelí Partida, the Director of Global Programs at the LGBTQ Victory Institute called the election “historic,” saying that it “exemplifies growing momentum for equality in the country.”

“Our state has made important strides in protecting the rights of our LGBTQ+ residents, but there is always more to do,” Healey said.

“LGBTQ candidates across the country had a very successful Election Night and when they take office, we will have more than 1,000 out elected officials serving for the first time,” said Victory Fund President and CEO Annise Parker in a statement.

“LGBTQ candidates are running in historic numbers and increasingly reflect the diversity of America, with more LGBTQ people of color, bisexual, queer, and non-binary leaders choosing public service as the way to make change,” said Annise Parker, President and CEO of the Victory Fund, in a statement.

“We need more people of color, young people and LGBTQ people in state and local government who will ensure politicians look to improve the lives of Texans, not further marginalize them.”

“While more LGBTQ people are running for office than ever before, we still hold a tiny proportion of election positions when compared to our numbers in the U.S. population.”

If elected to office, Kenyatta would be the first openly gay Black U.S. senator.
