By all accounts, 2006 was a mixed bag in the struggle for gay marriage. But despite setbacks nationwide, the movement gained ground in New York, where a judge ruled that state law prohibiting same-sex marriage violated the New York State Constitution. But 2006 came crashing in with a series of New York court rulings that halted the movement in its tracks. And around the country, with civil rights on state ballots, marriage equality lost big in the 2006 election. That’s not to say there weren’t a few good wins along the way, but looking back, 2006 was not our year.
