Japan does not currently have an equality law protecting LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination, although activists had pushed the government to pass such a law ahead of this summer’s Olympic Games.

Her historic nomination came on the same day as the House passed the Equality Act.
While the bill is expected to pass in the House, which is controlled by the Democrats, it will likely face more hurdles in the Senate, where Democrats maintain a slim majority.

Passage of the Equality Act would provide yet another measure of protection for the LGBTQ+.

The bill is a religious alternative to the Equality Act.
Over 200 companies signed the brief.
The win was even bipartisan!
The three cases surround sexuality and gender identity and will be heard in the court’s next term beginning in October.
The bill would prohibit discrimination in public places and in employment.
Lawmakers will meet on Tuesday to reintroduce the bipartisan Equality Act, which, if passed, would finally enshrine broad non-discrimination protections for the LGBTQ community into federal law.
