ISLE of KLEZBOS sextet brings their “rapturous & rollicking” spin on diasporic Yiddish culture and Klezmer music back to Joe’s Pub NYC, for a super-charged edition of the group’s annual KlezBiGay Pride show — celebrated with annual performances since 1999. The powerhouse, fun-loving all-gal band returns to The Public Theater’s beloved cabaret stage (named for Joseph Papp, aka Yossel Papirovsky: cultural activist & Yiddish lover). Tickets are $36.
Dubbed “cutting edge klezmer” by New York Magazine, ISLE of KLEZBOS features alumnae of Juilliard, Eastman, Berklee and Harvard who approach Yiddish archival treasures with sophisticated irreverence and deep respect, while also drawing critical admiration & fan acclaim for their genre-defying original compositions. Awarded a 2025 Manhattan Arts Grant for Creative Engagement, ISLE of KLEZBOS has toured from Vienna to Vancouver since 1998. Their media appearances have spanned from HBO to PBS, CBS, and “The L Word.” Collaborative projects have ranged from commissions by Kiki Smith and studio recordings for the Scissor Sisters, to performing as backing band for Jill Sobule’s “Songs from Yentl” and Gregg Bordowitz’s residency at MoMA/PS1. The ensemble’s latest album “Yiddish Silver Screen” focuses on the group’s fascinating array of re-imagined repertoire inspired by cinema soundtrack audio originally produced from 1932 to 1980.
