When Janelle Monáe came out as pansexual in Rolling Stone magazine, we at GO cried (actual) rainbow tears of joy (we were so elated and proud to have such a fierce artist playing on team “Queer Babe” we simply couldn’t help ourselves). We secretly prayed to the Sapphic goddesses that the rumors that Monáe might be more than friends with actress Tessa Thompson were true, but didn’t get our hopes up as we’ve been burned by lez gossip one too many times.
So when the news broke today that Monáe and Thompson are “deeply in love” our excitement was impossible to contain. “IT’S TRUE. TESSA AND JANELLE!” GO’s Managing editor, Corinne Kai frantically messaged me over G-Chat, sending me a link to page six.
We know you came here for the tea, so lez spill it! In an interview with “PorterEdit” Thompson got refreshingly raw and honest about her deep feelings toward Monáe.
“It’s tricky, because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space, and also wanting to use your platform and influence,” Thompson spilled. She also went on to explain that she comes from a very open minded family that has always been accepting of her sexuality. “I can take things for granted because of my family – it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be. I’m attracted to men and also to women. If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion. That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself. I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved ones,” she continues. “But so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?”
She also wasn’t shy about her mushy feels for Monáe. “Janelle and I love each other DEEPLY. We’re so close, we vibrate on the same FREQUENCY. If people want to SPECULATE about what we are, it doesn’t bother me” Thompson gushed.
