Did you miss hearing all about America’s athletic power couple Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird? Did you find yourself hoping and praying for more sexy and scandalous photos à la the ESPN Body Issue? Well, InStyle stepped in to help quell (incite is more like it) the thirst of queer women everywhere with their recent story on what’s next for Rapinoe and Bird that was published in their recent beauty issue.
While slightly more clothed in this shoot than ESPN’s, the couple poses in impeccably tailored menswear-inspired looks — boxy blazers, oversized trousers — mixed with feminine details — houndstooth, neon hues — while discussing everything from equal pay for female athletes to their relationship. One major theme that the couple discusses is dealing with their newfound fame, both individually for soccer superstar Rapinoe and for them as a couple.
“Things have changed for the better in a lot of ways, but figuring out how to navigate it all is hard,” Bird told the magazine. “Especially with the increase in recognition. We’re not used to it, and we’re still just normal, you know? We’re not like an NBA player who has millions of dollars to hire security and a driver. We’re just trying to figure those things out on the fly.”
