“I’m so excited to be part of @GLSEN’s #DayOfSilence during the #BreakThe Silence rally!”

Out stars JoJo Siwa, Zachary Quinto, and ALOK will appear tonight in GLSEN’s Breaking the Silence virtual rally. The rally concludes Day of Silence, a student-led protest movement against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination.

“I’m so excited to be part of @GLSEN’s #DayOfSilence during the #BreakThe Silence rally!” Siwa posted in a statement to Instagram. “I will be sharing my story and talking with the awesome GLSEN Student Council — join me.”

For Day of Silence — which was started in the 1990s by two college students — students commit to a vow of silence during the school day to illustrate the impact that silencing queer people has when made literal. They break the silence at evening rallies, where they come together and share stories and discuss ideas for progressive change and greater inclusivity in their communities. The theme for this year’s Day of Silence is “My Silence, My Story.”

Numerous LGBTQ+ celebrities and allies have posted “silent” videos in a show of support for Day of Silence, including “The L Word” star Jennifer Beals, Julia Roberts, Nicole Maines, the casts of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “A Million Little Things.”

GLSEN provides a schedule of events for those who wish to attend national or local rallies, both in person and virtually. They also host numerous virtual platforms throughout the day which ask LGBTQ+ students and allies to share their stories and videos in solidarity with the protest.

GLSEN’s national rally starts at 7 p.m. E.T. (4 p.m. P.T.) and can be streamed on all social media handles.
