SARAH TOCE
Founder and Publisher, The Seattle Lesbian

Attending a White House reception for top LGBT journalists and publishers this year is just the latest highlight in Sarah Toce´s award-winning career. The founder and editor-in-chief of The Seattle Lesbian—that city´s only lesbian-fronted online magazine—has profiled many of the world´s most influential leaders and entertainers. By writing and curating a mix of national and international news, political coverage and entertainment features, Toce shepherded The Seattle Lesbian to a threshold of one million global readers in its first year. Her dedication to LGBT journalism earned her a New Media Women Entrepreneur Award from the McCormick Foundation in 2012. Toce has appeared on Fox News, MSNBC, the Huffington Post and other news outlets with commentary on civil rights. It´s a tough job, but someone has to do it, right? ″I´m not sure who would choose the long hours and insane amount of dedication being a journalist takes! But it´s worth it when it is what you are meant to be doing, and when you see how your work positively affects other people,″ she says. Her tip for fellow business owners: ″If you can look in the mirror day after day, and wake up in the morning feeling pretty good about what you´re doing, you´re on the right track.″
