The Pat Parker/Vito Russo Library Book Discussion: “The Color Purple” By Alice Walker
March 7, 2017 @ 8:00 pm
FreeWinner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the acclaimed novel, told through the story of Celie Harris, examines the intersections of women of color, joined by their love for each other, the men who abuse them and the children they care for.
Celie becomes fixated on Shug Avery, a glamorous blues singer, and thus begins a lifetime of friendship and love between the two women–forming a strong bond that challenges the unrelenting structure of gender, race and sexual identity.
