The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will observe the 31st annual Fleet Week, May 22–May 27, with a week of activities, themed events and live demonstrations that celebrate the armed forces. Fleet Week is America’s premier tribute and “thank you” to the men and women who serve in the armed forces. Fleet Week at the Intrepid Museum is proudly supported by Coca-Cola and Lockheed Martin.

The following Fleet Week activities will be held at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and on Pier 86 (46 Street and 12 Avenue, Manhattan). Events on the pier are free and open to the public; events inside the Museum are included with Museum admission.

Retired and active U.S. military and U.S. veterans receive free Museum admission with proper I.D., generously provided by Bank of America.

The U.S. Marine Corp, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard will be on hand with demonstrations and activities, and will be showcasing the equipment, clothing and vehicles they use during active duty missions. Former Intrepid crew members will share stories throughout the Museum, live demonstrations and pop-up planetarium shows will be presented by Museum educators, and Fleet Week-themed Tour Guide Talks will take place on the hangar deck.

Wednesday, May 22
8:00am-9:30am: To kick-off the annual Fleet Week events, watch as Naval and Coast Guard ships sail up the Hudson River into New York City, traveling past the Museum’s Pier 86 before docking around the city. Arrival times to be confirmed via http://www.fleetweeknewyork.com/fleetweeknewyork/.

2:30pm: Elinor Smith: The Flying Flapper of Freeport: catch this performance and learn about this record-breaking Aviatrix from the 1920s.

Throughout the afternoon, there will be live demonstrations and pop-up planetarium shows presented by Intrepid Museum educators.

Museum is open from 10:00am–5:00pm.

Thursday, May 23
10:00am-3:00pm: U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Lawrence Lawson and a U.S. Naval Academy Yard Patrol squadron, docked at Pier 86, will be open for public tours.

2:30pm: Elinor Smith: The Flying Flapper of Freeport: catch this performance and learn about this record-breaking Aviatrix from the 1920s.

6:00pm: The 28th annual Salute to Freedom gala will take place on the Museum’s hangar deck. Tickets are on sale now at www.intrepidmuseum.org/Salute.

Throughout the afternoon, there will be live demonstrations and pop-up planetarium shows presented by Intrepid Museum educators.

Friday, May 24

7:00pm: Join the Intrepid Museum as it kicks off its 10th annual Summer Movie Series with a FREE screening of Top Gun on the flight deck! Bring your lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets. Doors open at 7:00pm and the program will begin at sunset, weather permitting. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis and space is limited. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase onsite.

Throughout the afternoon, there will be live demonstrations and pop-up planetarium shows presented by Intrepid Museum educators.

11:30am: Poof! Life in Vacuum: Museum educators demonstrate what would happen to the human body if it was exposed to the elements of outer space without a space suit.

Noon: Musical Performance from RamCorps: enjoy this high-impact visual brass and percussion ensemble from the University of Mobile.

Noon-4:00pm: Faces by Derrick will offer face painting on Pier 86.

1:00pm: Musical performance by the Latin Giants of Jazz on the Pier 86 main stage.

1:45pm: Blast Off! Launching the Space Shuttles: Museum educators discuss the science and engineering behind launching a space shuttle.

2:15pm: Airheads: How Do Things Fly?: Museum educators explore the science behind aviation in this demonstration about how things fly!

Monday, May 27—Memorial Day
11:00am: Honor the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces at the annual Memorial Day commemoration ceremony along with hundreds of veterans, representing wars and conflicts from WWII to the present, and their families. This annual ceremony will include the unfurling of a 100-foot American flag, the playing of Taps, a ceremonial wreath laying and a flyover by Navy jets. The event is free and open to the public.

10:00am-6:00pm: Throughout the day, Pier 86 will host displays and hands-on activities from the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, FDNY and Intrepid former crew members and educators.

Noon-6:00pm: U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Lawrence Lawson, docked at Pier 86, will be open for public tours.

Directions by NYC Metro Bus:
Take cross-town buses west. M34 (34th St.), M42 (42nd St.) or M50 (49th St.) to 12th Ave. and Hudson River. Intrepid is a short walk north from the M34 and M42. The M50 drops off directly in front of the Intrepid Museum.

Directions by NYC Metro Subway:
Take the A, C, E, N, Q, R, S, 1, 2, 3 or 7 train to 42nd St., then walk or take the M42 West bus to Hudson River (12th Ave). Walk north to Intrepid.

Directions from water:
Take New York Water Taxi to Pier 84 and walk one block north to the Intrepid Museum. From New Jersey, take the New York Waterway to Midtown (38th St.) and walk north on 12th Avenue to the Museum.
