The name of Miranda and Juddee Kawaiola’s bed and breakfast came to them easily. The Californian couple vacationed frequently in Hawaii, and “when we would return to our other island home in Alameda, our friends would say, ‘the mermaids are back.’ The moniker stuck!”

Seventeen years later, the couple now owns a thriving place to stay on one of Hawaii’s most happening islands. When they designed their oasis, they addressed a problem they had experienced as visitors to Maui. “We missed breakfast every morning because we’d go out on early boat dives,” Miranda said. “We always said that if we owned a B&B, no one would ever miss breakfast. After many dive trips to Maui and falling in love with the cultural vibe here we decided to call it home.”

Two Mermaids on Maui boasts two private suites with kitchenettes, sitting rooms and bedrooms decorated in a cheerful tropical fish theme. The private lanais come with propane grills, and guests also have access to the pool and hot tub. Each morning the couple delivers a lauhala basket stuffed with fresh, locally grown fruit (think pineapple, papaya, mango or the exotic rambutan) to accompany a breakfast spread of Maui-grown coffee, baked treats, granola and Greek yogurt. It’s personal touches like these that keep guests coming back, the couple said.

“We make every effort to help make this the best ever holiday for our guests,” Miranda said. The couple also owns a wedding business and Juddee, a licensed minister, has performed hundreds of ceremonies.

Having personally enjoyed Maui’s incredible outdoor adventures, the couple supports LGBT-friendly, local companies by directing guests to the best snorkeling and dive spots, scheduled hikes, dine outs, whale watches, dances and more. Miranda recommends paddling in an outrigger canoe for the ultimate Hawaiian experience.

“People choose to come to Maui for many reasons, and by the time they leave they are often surprised to realize that it is Maui that chooses them,” Miranda said. “The spirit of aloha surrounds us here. Before guests leave, we remind them to carry the beauty and spirit of Maui in their hearts. Wherever you are in the world, we can all live aloha,” Miranda added. “Many of our guests return year after year, and they become ohana—family.”
