Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Parsons Dance, Merce Cunningham:The Legacy Tour

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns for the 40th consecutive year to the New York City Center stage Nov 30-Jan 1, 2012 with exciting performances that have become a joyous holiday tradition. Robert Battle, in his first season as Artistic Director, will showcase the brilliant artistry and passionate spirit of Ailey’s extraordinary dancers in a series of premieres and new productions that extend Ailey’s vital legacy in exciting new directions. This year’s season includes “Home”, the world premiere of a bold new dance by hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris inspired by the stories of people living with or affected by HIV.

Head out to Flushing Meadows Park for Parsons Dance at the Queens Theatre in the Park Dec 10- 11. For more than 25 years, this internationally renowned company under the artistic direction of dancer/choreographer David Parsons has been building new audiences for contemporary dance by creating engaging and uplifting works of extraordinary artistry. This year’s repertory includes performances of “Swing Shift,” a dance for four couples with moves popularized by mid-20th century sock hops and swing dancing.

Don’t miss Merce Cunningham:The Legacy Tour at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House Dec 7-10. This major retrospective is a celebration of the legendary artist and his astonishing body of work. The program includes the revival of “Roaratorio,” and “Second Hand”. This tour will be a final chance to see these large-scale repertory works performed by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company before the group’s disbandment at the end of this year.
