Bi women are apparently huge stoners, according to a new study from the Journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
Researchers at the Columbia School of Public Health discovered that bi women smoke up to seven times as much weed as straight women. Ten percent of bi women smoke pot daily, while only 1.5 percent of straight women do. Similarly, only 10 percent of straight women claim to have smoked weed in the past year, compared to 40 percent of bi women.
Lesbians also smoke more weed than straight women, but not as much as bi ones. Six percent of lesbians smoke pot daily, and 26 percent report having smoked in the past year.
So, what’s up with all the weed-smoking among the bisexuals?! The research team isn’t sure, but they have some ideas. One possibility is that getting high is a way to cope with biphobia. Bi women face higher levels of stigma than lesbians or straight women, and they experience higher rates of depression and substance abuse.
The researchers also speculate that cannabis use among bi women correlates with Marijuana Use Disorder.
“Our results support existing literature by demonstrating that bisexual women have higher marijuana use disorder compared to heterosexual women,” Morgan Philbin, one of the study’s authors, wrote.
However, it’s not clear that bi women are using cannabis to the point of dependency, Out reports. These researchers may be jumping to conclusions based on their data and previous studies.
It could just be that bi women are super cool and chill. In any case, the new study certainly calls for more research into this phenomenon!
