School Ordered to Pay Damages in Prom Lawsuit

Judge awards $81,000 to lesbian student whose prom was canceled

JACKSON, Miss. — A federal judge on Monday signed an order awarding $81,000 to an openly lesbian high school student whose prom was canceled because she wanted to bring her girlfriend as her date.

U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson ordered the Itawamba County School District to pay the damages after he ruled in March that the prom cancellation violated the constitutional rights of Constance McMillen, who, along with the American Civil Liberties Union, sued the district.

The school agreed to revamp its policy on proms in light of the ruling to prevent future discrimination against LGBT students.
