Sam Smith and Kim Petras made LGBTQ history last night, when the pair took home the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Unholy.”

Smith graciously took a step back and turned the mic over to Petras to accept the award, as she is the first openly transgender solo artist to win a GRAMMY in the category. Petras acknowledged the historical gravity of her win, thanking the trans icons and allies who came before her, including Madonna, SOPHIE, and her own mother, who “believed me that I was a girl, and I wouldn’t be here without her and her support,” Petras said.

Smith is the first out nonbinary artist to win the award, and cheered Petras on while she gave her speech.

Petras also made her debut on the GRAMMY stage in last night’s performance of “Unholy” in which she and Smith sizzled, slayed, and sinned, leaving the audience spellbound. Smith kicked off the performance in a devilish red latex outfit, as dancers in ceromonial red sheaths circiled around them. Petras made her grand entrance, also in red, in a giant cage, enveloped by flames and a trio of she-devils. The duo belted the final chorus in harmony before the fire erupted and Smith’s dancers pulled them under.

Since receiving the nomination for “Unholy,” Smith has released their fourth studio album Gloria and Petras has released singles “If Jesus Was a Rock Star” and “brrr.”
